일본은 재무장할 수 있는 기회까지 생겼어요. 연합국 최고 사령부의 맥아더가 요시다 총리에게 경찰 예비대를 재빨리 늘리라고 요청했거든요. 일본에 머물던 미군이 일본을 비운 사이에, 혹시라도 소련이 공격할지도 모르니까요.

이런 식으로 경찰 예비대는 꾸준히 늘어났어요. 이들은 훗날 ‘자위대’로 크게 성장했지요.

일본의 운은 거기서 그치지 않았어요. 6 · 25 전쟁으로 산업이 부흥하는가 싶더니, 점차 국제적인 경쟁력까지 갖추게 되었어요. 일본이 만든 상품의 수출량이 크게 늘기 시작했던 거예요. 이즈음, 세계는 제2차 세계 대전 후 복구 작업이 한참이었거든요.

미국은 공산 국가의 도전에 크게 놀라 일본을 아시아의 자유 진영을 지키는 방패로 삼아야겠다고 생각하게 되었어요.

일본은 한동안 미국으로부터 거의 공짜나 다름없는 원조를 받게 되었어요. 일본의 산업은 더욱 크게 발전했지요. 또한 군대를 만들 수 없다 보니 국방 예산도 들지 않았어요. 그 돈은 산업에 다시 투자되어 산업 발전에 아주 큰 영향을 미쳤지요. 일본은 이미 1968년에 전 세계적으로 미국에 이어 두 번째로 큰 경제 대국이 되었어요.

그러나 시간이 지날수록 재벌이 다시 늘어나고, 정치인과 재벌의 부정부패가 드러나기도 했어요. 그 탓에 50여 년 동안 집권하고 있던 자민당이 정권을 빼앗기기도 했지요. 1990년대에 들어서는 세계 경제의 불황으로 수많은 금융 업체가 파산하는 등 경제 침체기가 찾아오기도 했어요.

우리나라와의 관계에 대해 일본은 교과서를 왜곡하여 과거의 침략 사실을 정당화했어요. 한편으로는 자위대를 강화하면서 무장하려 애쓰고 있어요. 이것이 지금의 일본의 모습이랍니다.
